The wireless industry is gradually retiring older cellular networks to accommodate faster, more dependable technology. This transition, called the 3G Sunset, is occurring across Canada from mid-2025 to the end of 2025. For homeowners and businesses that depend on monitored security systems, it’s crucial to understand how this change might impact your protection.

When Will 3G Shut Down in Canada?

  • Rogers began its 3G network shutdown on August 7, 2025.

  • Bell Mobility will retire its 3G service on December 31, 2025.

After these dates, any device that still uses 3G will stop communicating. This includes alarm panels, security communicators, and monitoring devices.

How Will This Affect Security Systems?

Many older security systems in Toronto and across Canada still rely on 3G cellular communicators to transmit alarm signals. Once the networks shut down:

  • Systems may display ongoing trouble alerts.
  • Some may fail to send emergency signals to the monitoring station.
  • Even dual-path systems (Wi-Fi plus cellular) can be disrupted if the cellular communicator is outdated.

For Rogers customers, this loss of service begins in August. Bell customers have until the end of December 2025 before their 3G-based systems lose functionality.

What Should Security Customers Do?

The solution is to upgrade to LTE or 5G-ready communicators. These newer devices provide stronger, faster, and more reliable connections for alarm monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 3G Sunset

Will my alarm system still work after the 3G Sunset?

If your system uses a 3G communicator, it will stop sending signals once Bell or Rogers retires their 3G networks. An upgrade to LTE or 5G is required to maintain service.

When is Rogers shutting down its 3G network?

Rogers will retire its 3G service beginning August 7, 2025.

When is Bell shutting down its 3G network?

Bell Mobility will retire its 3G service on December 31, 2025.

How do I know if my security system uses 3G?

If your alarm system was installed more than five years ago, there’s a strong chance it still relies on 3G. Your security provider or Avante Security can confirm this for you.

What happens if I don’t upgrade my system?

Your alarm may show an error condition or fail to connect to the monitoring station, leaving your home or business unprotected.

Can Avante Security upgrade my system?

Yes. Avante Security provides LTE and 5G-ready upgrades to keep your alarm system online and monitored 24/7.
